Real-Time vessel & object monitoring by VHF

The system allows persistent locating and monitoring of vessels and moving objects in a special area via VHF technologies.

The vmsTRACK is a small portable position transmitter, which broadcasts in a pre-set time interval via VHF radio. By means of the transmission contained information about current position as well as curse and speed over ground of the object, persistent real-time-tracking and monitoring is possible for a base station. Such a base station only needs a special tuned receiver unit to get these position reports. Creation of a so called “closed user group” is possible with this system, in which only the base station has the permission to look into.

Special areas can be programmed into the unit where not to enter or not to leave. So called “Geo-Fence-Areas”.

Intelligent tamper-proof solution

If the unit will be stolen or tampered, an intelligent high tech solution will trigger a flashing LED to inform the vessels Captain as well as a special information message is send to base station immediately.

Transmission will run according to the world wide standardized AIS system (Automatic Identification System), but on special proprietary frequencies which are not used for AIS. The regular AIS radio traffic will be not disturbed or interfered by the position reports of the vmsTRACK units.

“Who and Where” for coastal security and fleet management

The real-time-knowledge of “who and where?” is very important in administration of coastal fishing fleets as well as in coastal boarder security issues. By transmission of special names and unit IDs “friend or foe” identifying is possible.

Also afterwards the track of the vessel is stored within the vmsTRACK itself if a map is programmed.

Additional emergency distress button

The small vmsTRACK has got an additional emergency distress button. By triggering the alert function, additional to the regular position report on special frequency, an official emergency message will be send out on both regular AIS frequencies to reach every AIS receiver within transmission range of the vmsTRACK.

Individualization of vmsTRACK units

The vmsTRACK units can be individualized by means of programming ship name, type of vessel as well as area of activity into the unit for transmission.

The pre-set time interval is free to define. Two seconds up to 1 time per hour, everything is possible. As bigger the time gap is, as longer the battery capacity will be. E. g. once per minute will last for a couple of days.

The power supply for the vmsTRACK unit on a small fishing vessel can be realized by solar panel. This will continuously charge the transmitter.

Basic needs fulfilled

To be waterproof to a depth of 10 meters is nearly needless to say for a product in the maritime branch.

What is needed to run the vmsTRACK?

Each object going to be monitored needs a vmsTRACK. The charging station provides intelligent and ideal charging which ensures the long lifespan of the batteries.

Other VHF receiver will not work with the vmsTRACK.

Regatta Tracking

Being able to trace the course of a thrilling sailing regatta ashore in the best possible way is exactly what spectators at major sailing-events want.

The Nuremberg-based company Weatherdock AG has developed a system which meets exactly these requirements. This means that small portable transmitters are mounted on ships. These transmitters determine the current position by way of an integrated GPS module and transmit this position via VHF-radio to a receiver which is installed on shore. The transmission intervals of the position report are extremely short, every six seconds; however, the interval may be shortened down to two seconds, if necessary. The transmitted data also includes the current speed and course over ground as this data can be calculated from the GPS data.

The data transmission is effected by means of a specific frequency, provided by Weatherdock, with the result that the participating ships can be summarized as a “closed user group”. By using this method we can ensure that the normal radio communications in this area are not affected and that no one else can see or manipulate this information.

At the onshore base station, the incoming data is converted into data logs and forwarded to a software program, which edits this data and presents it in a visually appealing way.

This is done with a software program, which was developed by the German Company WinGPS. The final presentation of the regatta on a large monitor or on a video wall is visually appealing. The participating ships as well as static course markings and turning points are displayed differently from each other. The extremely short transmission intervals together with software ensure an optimal display – however, currently only in 2D presentation.

By means of the receiver of the Weatherdock company, all relevant data, such as wind velocity or current conditions at specific points, can also be included in the software and thus in the presentation for the spectators, provided that this data is available and/or transmitted.

easyPOSALERT is used at  the world‘s largest amateur racing series

The system named easyPOSALERT developed by Weatherdock is in use as the official tracking system for all ships at all events of this season’s BMW Sailing Cup 2012. The BMW Sailing Cup is the world’s largest regatta series for amateurs. During altogether 17 regatta weekends, finalists are determined throughout Germany, who will then compete against each other at the grand German final in Hamburg on 5th-7th October 2012.
The system’s major advantage for the BMW Sailing Cup is the fact that the Weatherdock easyPOSALERT transmits over VHF frequencies and is, as a result, completely independent of mobile networks which may be poor and overburdened.

RED BULL Storm Chase 2012 with easyPOSALERT

The tracking system easyPOSALERT by Weatherdock is in use at the RED BULL Storm Chase 2012. However, it is used here for the safety of the participating windsurfers. At the RED BULL Storm Chase it is all about withstanding forces of nature such as 10 wind forces (approx. 100 km/h) or more and about winning a windsurfing competition. Each participant and the entire security staff and cameramen in the water receive such a small transmitter. In this way, all positions can be tracked in realtime following activation of the devices. When a participant falls off his board and is adrift at sea he can be located and rescued very quickly. And again, the fact that VHF frequencies are used is the crucial point. The RED BULL Storm Chase takes place, for example, off Tasmania, off
Iceland or at the southern tip of Japan and in uninhabited areas in these regions. One cannot assume that network coverage is provided there, which can withstand these requirements.

The tracking system easyPOSALERT is also applicable for commercial purposes.
Tracking of ferry or pilot boats or of private tender fleets, without affecting the local and usual radio communications, is imaginable. Even in the charter business is its use conceivable.

Persistent locating where necessary!

The easyPOSALERT is a portable position transmitter which uses VHF technology.
The device enables the persistent locating and monitoring of moving objects within range.

Function:

The easyPOSALERT has a built-in GPS receiver. After manual activation the device transmits the current GPS position by means of VHF signals in a preset time interval. This position report is sent on customized VHF frequencies, so a “closed user group” may be arranged. Each unit of the easyPOSALERT can be personalized individually. In case of an emergency there is an alert function which transmits on regular frequencies receivable by everyone within range.

The easyPOSALERT is floatable and waterproof to a depth of 10m. The rechargeable batteries have a lifespan of 5 days, depending on the pre-set transmission interval. The transmission range of the easyPOSALERT is from about 10nm (10m height of receiving antenna) up to 40nm (air craft at 1000 ft).

The easyPOSALERT is especially suitable for race boats, ferry boats, pilot vessels, jet-skis, smaller fishing boats and charter boats. Fact is: the easyPOSALERT is needed where persistent locating and monitoring of moving objects becomes necessary.

What is necessary to run the easyPOSALERT?

Each object going to be monitored and located needs an easyPOSALERT. The charging station provides intelligent and ideal charging, which ensures the long lifespan of the batteries. The object-related data is programmed into the device by the customers administrator or by the manufacturer. Only a VHF receiver, the easyRX2S, is needed to receive the customized signals of the easyPOSALERT . It is factory preset to the custom frequencies. Normally the “closed user group” as well as all other objects are displayed on the chart plotter or PC screen.

The usage of an easyRX2S allows the management of different “closed user groups” on the same customized frequency.
