Extreme conditions demand uncompromising reliability. Icy cold, severe storms, remote seas, and expeditions lasting months far from any infrastructure place the highest demands on both people and technology. For many years, we have had the privilege of accompanying the most renowned German polar explorer and adventurer of our time on his voyages aboard his sailing vessel, the Dagmar Aaen: Arved Fuchs.
Over the course of his career, he has reached both the North and South Poles on foot and is considered an expert in extreme expeditions. Since the 1990s, he has increasingly focused on sea voyages. His vessel is a traditionally built fishing cutter. On these journeys, he traverses historic sea routes such as the Northeast and Northwest Passages and simultaneously documents ocean changes through projects like “Ocean Change.”
Arved Fuchs embodies the spirit of discovery, experience, and responsibility at sea like few others. Whether in the Arctic, the Antarctic, or remote oceans, his expeditions regularly take him to regions where navigation and safety determine success or failure. We are all the more proud that he has relied on our maritime safety electronics for many years.
The remote routes and often extreme weather conditions at sea make navigation and safety on board crucial challenges. Especially where visibility, ice, and storms are unpredictable, reliable maritime electronics are essential.
For many years, Arved Fuchs has therefore relied on state-of-the-art AIS technology from our company. The AIS systems help to detect other vessels early and to be visible oneself – an important safety factor, particularly in remote waters where traditional communication channels are limited.
Arved Fuchs currently uses the easyTRX3S AIS transceiver, which is designed for robust use under extreme conditions. The device offers reliable transmit and receive functions and can be flexibly integrated into existing onboard systems. Especially on long expeditions, reliable AIS operation provides the safety necessary for navigation, collision avoidance, and orientation in remote and difficult-to-access regions. Using the technology in real-world conditions under extreme circumstances reveals how it actually performs and where improvements are needed. This feedback informs the continuous improvement of our devices – a direct benefit for everyone at sea.
Arved Fuchs’s travels combine a thirst for adventure, research, and responsibility. We are delighted to accompany him on his expeditions and wish him continued safe voyages, calm seas, and many unforgettable experiences.

At sea, every minute can be crucial. Whether you’re an experienced sailor, a passionate powerboat driver, or a professional marine operator, your safety and that of your crew are always our top priority.
In addition to proven aids such as life jackets and EPIRBs (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons), which have long been standard equipment, AIS (Automatic Identification System) rescue transmitter, such as AIS MOB or AIS SART, are becoming increasingly important in significantly increasing safety at sea. They are an indispensable addition that helps to find you or your crew quickly and reliably in an emergency.
An AIS rescue transmitter operates via the Automatic Identification System (AIS) and — if it complies with the latest standard (ECDIS 63269 IEC 2022) — also via DSC (Digital Selective Calling) and transmits a distress call with the current GPS position. The signals are transmitted by surrounding vessels, as well as by the GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) to the responsible MRCC (Maritime Rescue Coordination Center), i.e., the coastal stations. Two types of beacon are distinguished:
Both systems ensure that the exact location is immediately visible – regardless of visibility or weather conditions.
Our infographic shows the precise and rapid process of a MOB accident involving such an AIS rescue beacon:
The emergency begins when a person falls overboard. Whether due to an unexpected wave, a mistake, or a gust of wind.
If the person is carrying an AIS distress beacon (such as an AIS MOB or AIS SART), it is usually automatically activated as soon as it comes into contact with water or is manually activated. This is the crucial step that sets the rescue chain in motion.
The activated beacon now sends a distress signal simultaneously via two essential channels: AIS (Automatic Identification System) and DSC (Digital Selective Calling). This parallel alert maximizes the range and the probability that the distress call will be received quickly.
The signal is received not only by the vessel’s own yacht (if an AIS receiver is on board), but also by all nearby vessels and by the responsible coastal station. The receivers’ plotters and maps display the exact position of the person who has fallen overboard.
The AIS distress beacon has integrated GPS. This means that it not only transmits a distress signal but also the position of the person in distress.
This precise location enables nearby vessels and the official search and rescue (SAR) service to navigate directly to the scene of the accident without time-consuming searching. The rescue boat or assisting yacht can quickly locate and rescue the person.
An AIS rescue transmitter is an essential component of modern safety equipment at sea. Whether as an AIS MOB for sailors and motorboaters or as an AIS SART for larger boats and life rafts, these devices ensure that valuable minutes are not lost in an emergency.

Sometimes we receive stories that bring a smile to our faces—and at the same time demonstrate how seriously maritime safety is taken. Recently, a customer told us how she outfitted her seaworthy mascot, a bear, for the sailing season—with an oil jacket, life jacket, lifebelt, and an easyRESCUE from Weatherdock.
But that’s not all: In addition to the little bear, Alfonso, Boris Herrmann’s monkey, has also been well-equipped, as has the mascot of the DGzRS in Cuxhaven. Better safe than sorry – whether you’re a professional skipper or a small companion.
The mascots accompany their owners on great adventures. Alfonso, for example, appeared on the YouTube and Instagram channel Team Malizia at the end of November 2024, and the accompanying children’s book about his sailing adventures was completed almost simultaneously.
The small easyRESCUE AIS rescue transmitter was made from a peppermint tin.
The AIS Summit 2025 is one of the leading conferences in the maritime technology sector, focusing on AIS vessel tracking, new applications, data integration, and innovations in safety, navigation, and surveillance.
The event will be held in Hamburg, specifically in Kampnagel, Alabama, and will attract international experts, decision-makers, and innovators. Topics include:
Weatherdock CEO Alfred Kotouczek
With our background in maritime safety electronics, navigation, tracking, and boat monitoring, we bring unique expertise. Weatherdock not only develops AIS transceivers and distress beacons, but also operates IoT-based boat monitoring systems. These areas represent a significant portion of the future opportunities – for greater safety, more efficient processes, and better connectivity at sea and on coastal waters.
Topics of Session 1 on November 5, 2025:
Annika and Eric from the YouTube channel Karl Ocean and the Instagram channel karl.ocean document their life on a sailboat, including the refit of their over 40-year-old sailboat, Karl – authentic, entertaining, and with great attention to detail. Their journey inspires thousands of followers, who accompany the couple on their journey to a long-distance cruising lifestyle.
Safety on board plays a central role for them – especially on the high seas. The AIS Transceiver easyTRX3S has recently become an important part of their safety equipment. While many boats only receive AIS, the easyTRX3S also enables the active transmission of AIS signals. This means that Annika and Eric are recognized by other vessels and visible on the plotter – a huge advantage, especially at night, in poor visibility, or in busy sea areas.
We are currently receiving many inquiries about the new AIS Class M and would like to provide more clarity:
YES – all of our easyRESCUE devices are still approved! They are considered AIS SART devices, which are subject to an even stricter standard (IEC61097-14). AIS SART devices meet SOLAS requirements and are also approved for commercial shipping.
All easyRESCUE variants equipped with DSC have always implemented the DSC function (send and receive) according to Class M. Therefore, all of our easyRESCUE variants with DSC are still approved under the new standard.
The new AIS Class M standard only applies to AIS MOB devices. The following new regulations apply to AIS Class M as of January 2025:
✅ All Weatherdock rescue beacons (easyRESCUE & easy2-MOB) may continue to be sold/purchased and used – fully compliant with the regulations.

The German Association for Maritime Rescue Equipment (FSR) offers various seminars and lectures aimed at water sports enthusiasts and designed to raise awareness of safety on the water. A key offering is the safety seminar under the motto “Safety and Joy on the Boat.” This seminar sensitizes participants to potential hazards at sea and imparts knowledge about the correct safety equipment and its use. It is aimed particularly at small crews on sailing or motor yachts.
In addition to seminars, the FSR organizes theme days on specific safety aspects at trade fairs such as BOOT Düsseldorf. For example, theme days on pyrotechnics, cold-weather suits, and life rafts were offered in 2025. These events allow participants to delve deeply into specific safety topics and gain practical experience.
Together with the FSR, we are committed to ensuring that safety on the water is always our top priority.
For a few days now, a small but very significant ship has been adorning the entrance area of Weatherdock: the donation collection ship of the German Sea Rescue Association (DGzRS). With this initiative, we would like to support the valuable and tireless work of the sea rescuers who ensure safety at sea every day.
The DGzRS is responsible for the maritime search and rescue service on the North Sea and Baltic Sea – autonomously and independently. With their state-of-the-art rescue cruisers and boats, the sea rescuers are ready to help people in distress at sea around the clock – and this is financed exclusively by donations. Without volunteers, their life-saving work would not be possible.
As a company dedicated to maritime safety, the topic of sea rescue is particularly important to us. Our AIS rescue transmitters and navigation solutions help to locate people in distress more quickly and make rescue operations more efficient. With the donation collection ship, we not only want to provide financial support, but also draw attention to the importance of this important work.
Every euro helps to support the work of the sea rescuers and save lives!
We are proud to be able to contribute a small part to the great mission of the DGzRS and hope that many more will follow this example.
Technology is constantly evolving – we at Weatherdock are consistently following this path. That’s why we are saying goodbye to the tried and tested easyTRX3 and proudly presenting its powerful successor: the easyTRX3S!
The easyTRX3 has been a reliable companion for skippers and boat owners for years. But with the increasing demands on maritime safety, connectivity and user-friendliness, we have further developed the transponder. The result: The easyTRX3S – an AIS Class B transceiver with IoT connectivity, integrated WiFi as standard and ME SENSE for smart boat monitoring.
The easyTRX3 is officially discontinued, but technical support, repairs and upgrades are still available. For anyone who wants to rely on the latest technology, the easyTRX3S offers a future-proof solution with even more features and smart connections.

There has been a new standard for the well-known AIS MOB (Man over Board) rescue transmitters since January 1, 2021 (ECDIS 63269 IEC 2022). This standard states that all “AIS MOB” devices with DSC (Digital Selective Calling) also need a DSC receiver. In addition, all automatic mechanisms must be able to be switched off.
From January 1, 2025, the sale of the previous AIS MOB devices will be prohibited. It is still unclear whether the use of such devices will still be permitted from this point onwards.
Until now, the AIS MOB devices could only send in the DSC “closed loop”. This means to a circle of previously programmed MMSI numbers (Maritime Mobile Service Identity Number).
The new AIS Class M devices (AMRD Group A = Autonomous Maritime Radio Devices) also send in the “open loop”, i.e. they send an official distress call to the GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) rescue chain.
A DSC receiver is essential so that the rescue transmitter can receive confirmation as soon as the distress signal is confirmed by a potential first responder or a rescue coordination center (MRCC = Maritime Rescue Coordination Center). The DSC receiver is therefore necessary in order to be able to switch off the distress signal after it has been received in order to keep the radio channel free.
According to the latest standard, all “automatic” functions, i.e. automatic triggering mechanisms, must be able to be switched off. To prevent an emergency signal from being sent accidentally during storage or transport, for example, it must be possible to deactivate the automatic triggering of a rescue transmitter. The easy2-MOB meets this requirement with a slider that can activate or deactivate all automatic functions.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) recommends purchasing devices that meet the latest standard. The easy2-MOB from Weatherdock meets all the requirements of the new standard and has EU certification. In addition, the easy2-MOB is the only AIS Class M rescue transmitter that is itself capable of floating.
